Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow – BC’s Green Jobs Conference – Promotes Transition to Low Carbon Economy
(Vancouver) Green Jobs BC is pleased to announce the Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow Conference will be held on November 24th and 25th at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. Now is the time to unite around a shared vision for green jobs in the new economy. Jobs Today, Jobs Tomorrow aims to do just that -- convene a diverse range of individuals and organizations, facilitate cross-sector connecting and learning, and unite around a shared plan for good, green jobs in BC.
“It’s been almost a year since the Paris Agreement and we need to unite around a climate and jobs plan for a low carbon economy in BC,” commented Lisa Matthaus, Co-chair of Green Jobs BC. “Other jurisdictions, like California and Ontario, are proving that ambitious climate goals can actually create thousands of good, well-paid jobs.”
Conference participants will learn about policy that’s working in other jurisdictions; global leadership initiatives and progress towards climate goals; and grassroots leadership stories from BC and Canada.
The conference program includes speakers from the UK, California and a keynote from Canada’s own science journalist Bob McDonald who is calling for a green, industrial revolution.
“It’s not just about creating new jobs,” remarked Darryl Walker, Co-chair of Green Jobs BC. “With the right policies, many existing jobs can become ‘greener’ and contribute to lowering greenhouse gas emissions.”
This is the third conference hosted by Green Jobs BC. The last conference, in 2012, resulted in recommendations for action in four key areas: transportation, building retrofits, energy, and forestry. These policy recommendations are in the plan, Moving Towards a Bold Green Jobs Plan for BC, and available on our website. This year, conference organizers will report on how well BC is doing towards implementing those policies.
This year, in partnership with The Tyee, Green Jobs BC presents a special media workshop on the morning of November 24th for journalists, journalism students and other communications specialists on new ways to frame the public discussion about climate and the economy.
